Astor Pantalen Piazzolla was an Argentine tango composer, bandoneon player and arranger. His oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. A virtuoso bandoneonist, he regularly performed his own compositions with a variety of ensembles. Piazzolla formed his Orquesta de Cuerdas (String Orchestra), which performed with the singer Jorge Sobral at the end of the 50's. He received the news of the death of his father in October 1959 while performing with Juan Carlos Copes and Mara Nieves in Puerto Rico and on his return to New York City a few days later, he asked to be left alone in his apartment and in less than an hour wrote his famous tango "Adis Nonino", in homage to his father. Back in Buenos Aires later that year he put together the first, and perhaps most famous, of his quintets, the first Quinteto, initially comprising bandoneon (Piazzolla), piano (Jaime Gosis), violin (Simn Bajour), electric guitar (Horacio Malvicino ) and double bass (Kicho Daz).
